You know how sometimes a place exists that you passed by many many times but didn’t know it was there. Well, today was just such an occasion as I headed off to do a pre-wedding shoot with Heather & Alastair. The guys are getting married at Oran Mor in November and I’m really looking forward to photographing their big day.
But, back to the pre-wedding shoot and the place in question was the Dean Village. To quote Wikipedia “Dean Village (from dene, meaning ‘deep valley’) is a former village immediately northwest of Edinburgh, Scotland city centre. It was known as the “Water of Leith Village” and was a successful grain milling hamlet for more than 800 years. At one time there were no fewer than eleven working mills there, driven by the strong currents of the Water of Leith”.
I’m not usually one for history as such, but, stepping into the Dean Village is a bit like stepping back in time and all but a stone’s throw away from the centre of Edinburgh – from my point of view, perfect for photography, tons of locations and varied backdrops all in one place.
We kicked off at the rear of Heather & Alastair’s home, which led to a small grassy area and a waterfall! Now I guess there aren’t many people that can lay claim to that! Moving into the village itself just across the road, the only thing I had to worry about was dodging the number of tourists, cyclists and joggers that seemed to continually appear from nowhere. We quickly bagged a number of different shots (including some of my usual flash lit images for a bit of variation) before calling it a day – all wrapped up in about 90 minutes (dodged the rain as well).
