Edinburgh Wedding Photography: Brooke & Chris at Houstoun House

Well, after my recent foray into fashion photography, it was back to wedding photography today and what a great day I had shooting Brooke & Chris’ wedding. Brooke is from Australia so there was a real cosmopolitan feel about today with family and friends from Australia, from London and more local as well, all adding to the great atmosphere.

The guys had chosen to get married at the Macdonald Houstoun House hotel just outside Edinburgh and it’s a great venue, with a fantastic walled garden. On the day itself, there was another wedding being held, but the team at Houstoun have it so well co-ordinated that you wouldn’t have known!

As usual, my day kicked off with the bridal preparations and they were certainly in full gear when I arrived, with plenty of comings and goings…and champagne…of course! I grabbed some shots before heading outside the find the guys. The weather on the day was quite changeable…sunny one minute, overcast the next, typically Scottish, but at least any rain held off which was especially important as the ceremony was being held outside in the gardens. I had intended to take some images of Brooke in her wedding dress prior to the ceremony but unfortunately we ran out of time before the ceremony…not to worry, there would always be time later in the day.

With the ceremony completed, Brooke & Chris exited to the blowing of bubbles..great idea guys, and really unusual. Drinks reception and group shots done, I headed off with the guys for their bride & groom shots, but not before encountering the wrath of the Houstoun House staff, who reminded me that we were already due in for the wedding breakfast. Charm school must have worked as I bartered an extra 25 minutes for the shots…thanks guys, they’re a great team at the hotel and try to be as flexible as possible.

After the wedding breakfast, I’d asked the guys if we could have 10 more minutes for photography and they duly obliged. We headed off to an old shed that Brooke had spotted earlier in the day. I thought it would look good if I placed a flash inside the shed to light the scene, and we created some of my favourite images from the day. Although most of the wedding day is photographed in a documentary style, I do like to get creative at some point during the day and produce some eye catching images..hope you like them.

With the first dance over and the evening reception in full swing, I left everyone to party into the night. Thanks Brooke & Chris for going along with some of my ideas…hope you had a great day. Here’s some of my favourite images.
