Edinburgh Wedding Photography: Judith & Billy at Lothian Chambers

More wedding photography in Edinburgh today as I found myself at Lothian Chambers on the Royal Mile for the wedding of Judith & Billy.

For me, the day had started a bit earlier at the couple’s home in Edinburgh where Judith & the girls were getting ready. I stopped by briefly to photograph the dress, jewellery, shoes and flowers as well as a few “on the fly” shots as the girls all had a bite to eat. I would point out that, at this stage in the day, the sun was shining brightly – this will become relevant later.

There’s a real bustle of activity outside Lothian Chambers, situated as it is opposite St. Giles Cathedral. Always a lot of wedding activity so you certainly wouldn’t want to start photographing guests prior to the ceremony, just in case those guests are not for your wedding party! It’s also amazing how many tourists stop and photograph the brides arrival and today was no different as Judith arrived in the car.

The cermony rooms at Lothian Chambers are great for photography – wood panelling, high ceilings, sweeping staircases and tons of light pouring in; more than fitting for the ceremony which included a cellist, a choir and three separate readings. And, not to mention, Judith & Billy’s exit as a married couple to the strains of “All you need is love”, brilliantly sung by the choir.

The group shots followed and, just as were finishing the last few, down came the rain…and boy, did it come down! I can honestly say that I’ve never attempted to shoot in anything quite like it – it had the crowds on the Royal Mile scampering for the nearest cover. We had intended to head off in the bridal car to Holyrood Park for some bride & groom shots. Having arrived there, the best we could manage was a few images with the umbrella and a few more walking along the road before the heavens opened yet again. So, back to the car and to the reception venue, St. Columbas by the Castle. I’ve got to be honest, I’ve walked by this building quite a few times and never even knew it was there – I really need to open my eyes more in future.

With the reception, cake cutting, speeches and first dance completed, I left Judith & Billy to party on into the night..and, wouldn’t you know it, it had stopped raining!

Here’s some of my favourite images.
